The Boreland Bonspiel

Every year, the Club holds a Bonspiel at Perth. The Club takes a number of sheets of ice at Perth and plays a Bonspiel, typically of three short ends, for the Bonspiel Quaich. This is followed by refreshments at the Ice Rink, the prizes for the evening and noisy comradeship!

In earlier years, the Club would hire a bus and this allowed members to imbibe copious amounts of liquor after the competition. Tequila Slammers were a popular drink for several years. The Club would arrange a kitty which kept members in drink for the entire evening!

One year, the bus failed to arrive causing great confusion and necessitating a hurried reorganisation of travel to Perth by members` cars. Luckily, there was time for all participants to arrive in time for the curling. Subsequently, for a number of years, the Club hired a Scout Minibus with one of the members driving. More recently, travel is arranged by groups of members car-sharing - the drivers being offered a half-price kitty.

Traditionally, the Bonspiel prize, on a" points up, ends up" basis, is the Bonspiel Quaich Trophy and a half bottle of Grouse Whisky to each curler. Some or all of the whisky was then donated by the winners to the evening`s entertainment by pouring it into the Quaich and passing this around all of the attendees until it was all consumed. In recent years, this became less popular when an inferior whisky was used!

If the Club does not have enough members available to play in the Bonspiel, members of neighbouring clubs who also have a close relationship with Borland are invited to make up the numbers.
